In May of ’69 our 105mm battery was set up in a hellhole named LZ Phyllis. The infantry unit that was running sweeps outside the wire came upon a cache of NVA mortars, rockets, and hand grenades. Apparently, some officer ordered the grunts to bring it into the firebase. I saw a Jeep with a trailer full of the stuff bounce past my parapet. Shortly thereafter our Ammo Sgt. and two guys from another gun section drove by the trailer. One of the guys asked the Sgt. If they could walk over and look at the cache, he said yes. He stayed with the vehicle. When they were standing there looking at the stuff, something went wrong and the entire load exploded. They died instantly along with nine other guys who were infantry. That stuff should’ve never been allowed to come on base. I don’t know if the person who allowed that to happen was ever charged. We were getting hit every night on Phyllis, and shortly after that episode, we abandoned the LZ and moved on.
