I don’t have a story to tell, but you almost inevitably will receive one from some former soldier who claims he was spit on by ‘hippies in the airport’ while returning in uniform from Vietnam. Please treat these skeptically. Nearly all of these tales fall apart upon questioning. They often turn out to be a story someone heard from someone else who heard it from someone else. A serious academic book (1998) about this phenomenon, The Spitting Image, by Jerry Lembcke, calls it a myth and says there is no verified incident of it happening. These tales defame a generation of young people (like me) who fought to end the war and bring the troops home.
