In 1964, Luke Martin was serving in Vietnam. But he wasn’t a soldier. He and his family were Mennonite missionaries, offering assistance to the Vietnamese people.”We were in Saigon at the time and we were involved in a building program at one of our centers to develop more facilities. And the owner of the facility suggested that we might want to build a bomb shelter because at that time the United States began bombing the North. Many people in the Saigon area feared that there would be a response by someone. I don’t know. North Vietnam or China or someone or Russia might bomb Saigon.”

“And one of the newspapers editorialized that looks like a kind of a confrontation between David and Goliath.”

“I wrote to my parents that said the newspaper didn’t say which was Goliath and which was David and didn’t say whether they knew the outcome of that conflict. IIt was a kind of prophetic word by that newspaper back in 1964 already about the the ultimate outcome of the conflict.”
