I was a spec 5 helicopter crew chief with the 117th aviation company First Aviation Brigade located near Long Binh. One of our missions was to support the Army Special Forces on the coast at Long Hai, where they trained Cambodian troops.
One day we arrived and the troops were in class all day, so I bummed a ride to the beach to hang out. As I was sitting there a Cambodian lady started talking to me and I found out that she was a nurse with the Cambodian unit. Her and her two cousins and I spent an enjoyable afternoon kidding and teasing each other.
I came home in August of 1971 and I have wondered ever since if she made it out alive because the Khmer Rouge killed everyone who had a high school education or above.
I was also on a special mission where the markings and numbers were crossed off our aircraft and we went to Phnom Penh and picked up US troops at the airport and flew them all the way across Cambodia to Batembang on the Thailand border.
